Why is my skin so dry?
There is no one answer to the question of ‘why is my skin so dry?’ - but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a solution!
The important thing to remember is that your skin is sensitive, so even the smallest change can cause dryness. Exposure to the cold, especially in winter, taking too many long and hot showers, and using harsh soaps can be damaging to your skin.
As we age, it’s normal for your skin to age too. You may notice a difference in skin texture and drop in the moisture levels of your skin. It’s quite common for dry skin around your eyes and on your face, in particular, to increase for more mature skin.
For the beauty gurus out there, dry skin on your face can also be caused by the products you use – also known as contact dermatitis. This is when the skin becomes dry and irritated because of a product you may be allergic to, or an ingredient within a face cream or makeup product you are allergic to. That’s why you should always do a patch test before introducing new skin care products into your routine!
How to treat dry skin
Dry skin can be irritating and sometimes quite painful, however, treating dry skin is simple with just a few changes to your skin care routine for dry skin!
We’ve outlined three easy ways to treat dry skin, below:
1. Invest in a daily skin care routine
Even the smallest addition to your skin care routine for dry skin helps soothe irritated and dry skin. It’s important to have a deeply hydrating routine and to always do a patch test of any new products to be sure you aren’t allergic.
If you’re unsure on the best skin care routine for dry skin, try the following steps:
- Cleanse your skin: Using an oil-based or water-based cleanser washes away all the contaminates and debris your skin absorbs during the day and helps balance your skin's pH level.
- Apply a moisturising toner: Look to add a toner with soothing ingredients like Aloe vera and hyaluronic acid to your skin care routine for dry skin for an extra hydrating kick. This step is important to give your skin the deepest cleanse possible and prepare it for the rest of your skin care routine.
- Use a hydrating serum: Now you’ve fully prepared your skin, it’s time to start adding the moisture. The best serums for dry skin on your face will contain ingredients like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides.
- Dab on an eye cream: While many beauty bloggers swear by caffeine in your eye cream, if you have dry skin around your eyes then it’s best to avoid this as it can dehydrate your skin. Instead go for a replenishing eye cream containing squalene, shea butter or avocado oil.
- Apply your moisturiser: This is a key step to really lock in all the products. During the day, use a lighter cream with an SPF of at least factor 30. At night, use a cream that’s designed with ingredients that work through the night that will help your skin feel restored, smooth, and glowing. Soothe the moisturiser into your face, gently pulling it down to treat any dry skin on your neck.
- Always remember your SPF: This is especially important if your daytime moisturiser doesn’t contain any SPF. Don’t be fooled by the frost of winter, you need to apply SPF even in the colder months because the UV rays can still cause drying damage to your skin.
2. Take extra care of skin in cold weather
Cold weather can be damaging for your skin, especially if yours is already prone to dryness.
If you get dry skin on your hands, try using an intensive hand moisturiser with cocoa butter. When you’re outside, always wear a lovely pair of cotton gloves to protect your hands from the chill and help lock in all the lovely moisturiser.
While a long, relaxing, hot bath might sound appealing during the winter months, too much hot water can dry out skin. So, try to limit the length of hot showers or baths, and always apply a rich hydrating body lotion after you’ve bathed to treat dry skin!
