Skincare for Older Women: How to Look After Your Skin in Your 50s and Beyond!

So much skincare advice is focused on preventing wrinkles, but what if you already have them? Read our article to find out the best care for ageing skin!

When it comes to skincare, so much of the advice out there is focused on preventing wrinkles and fine lines. But what’s the best care for ageing skin when you’ve already earned those well-deserved laugh lines and crow’s feet?

The truth is, mature skin has its own unique beauty, and caring for it is about much more than just turning back the clock. It’s about embracing where you are now, nurturing your skin, and making it the healthiest and most radiant it can be – wrinkles and all!

In this article, we’ll explore the best tips on skincare for older women, helping our readers celebrate their skin at every age!

What is mature skin?

First things first, what do we mean by ‘mature skin’? We know it sounds like you’re a bit long in the tooth, senior, or even fuddy duddy. Dare we say it, it sounds old!

However, here at Absolute Collagen, we don’t believe in being ‘over the hill’ – we’re more golden years than being past one’s prime. As such, when we’re talking about what mature skin is, we’re simply referring to skin that may be experiencing some signs of ageing

Maybe your natural collagen production has slowed down (collagen levels start to drop significantly around the age of 50), or perhaps you’re noticing more fine lines and wrinkles staring back in the mirror each morning. It might even be that you’re just dealing with dry skin on a more regular basis.

Now, none of these signs of mature skin are any indication that you need to trade your active lifestyle for a rocking chair on the porch. In fact, we believe mature skin is its own type of beauty, one to be embraced, wrinkles and all!

So, this particular article on skincare for over 50s is not about how to get rid of wrinkles or magically wipe away crow’s feet, we simply want to talk through the best care for ageing skin.

What’s the best skincare routine for mature skin?

While signs of sagging skin might have you frantically Googling, ‘dermatologist recommended skincare routine for 50s’, we prefer to take a slightly different approach. Instead, we turned to our very own Maxine Laceby, co-founder of Absolute Collagen, to talk through the best care for ageing skin, according to her own daily routine:

For a bit more detail on how you can implement this type of skincare for older women, continue reading, below.

1. Wash your face twice a day

Before we get into our recommendations for the best moisturiser for mature skin, we first need to prep your skin for those products. And that means washing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once right before bed.

Why exactly do I need to wash my face twice a day, we hear you ask?

Well, cleaning your face in the evening helps to remove any makeup, oil, or sweat from the day, while a morning cleanse gets rid of excess oil or dead skin that might have accumulated when you slept. Combining both these cleanses ensures the best care for ageing skin, helping the subsequent moisturisers and face creams absorb more easily into your skin.

We recommend using a gentle cleanser (preferably alcohol-free), and that you avoid bar soap completely, as it can cause dry skin. All you need to do is apply some cleanser to your fingertips and rub gently into your face, before washing off with lukewarm water. Easy!

2. Add in a toner

With your face lovely and clean, you can move onto the next step of this skincare for over 50s routine: applying your toner.

Similar to washing your face, toner helps to cleanse the skin, remove dead skin cells, and unclog pores, while also balancing the skin’s pH level and brightening your skin tone. It’s best to think of this nifty little product as the final step of your cleansing routine in the morning, preparing your skin for the serums, moisturisers, and SPFs that offer the best care for ageing skin.

Apply your toner of choice to a cotton pad, gently layer it onto your face, and you’re ready for the next step of skincare for older women!

3. Apply a face serum

Prepping your skin is all well and good, but you came to this article looking for something a little juicier – you came looking for actual product recommendations that will provide the best care for ageing skin.

So, without further ado, let’s talk about our Deep Lift Collagen Boosting Serum!

Lightweight and fast-absorbing, this amazing product is used to target the likes of fine lines and wrinkles or dark circles under eyes. In fact, in our serum clinical trials, participants reported an 18% improvement in the appearance of wrinkles and a 28% improvement in skin firmness when using the serum twice a day. Sounds like the perfect fit for skincare for older women, right?

Using our Deep Lift Serum couldn’t be easier, either. Just apply a few drops onto your fingertips and then rub it into your face, paying close attention to the corners of your eyes, top of your lip, and forehead. Leave to dry for five minutes and you’re done!

4. Keep your skin hydrated

Now for the finishing touches: applying the right face cream for mature skin!

The idea behind this final step is to soothe your face and lock in the moisture that keeps your skin happy and healthy. That’s exactly why our Deep Lift Day and Night Creams provide the best care for ageing skin!

Not only does this powerhouse duo help to moisturise your skin, but they also contain SPF 30 to protect your skin from UV rays every day. This is particularly important as UV rays can damage skin in the autumn and winter, as well as the spring and summer, making our day and night creams essential additions to your skincare for mature skin.

All you need to do is add a layer of the cream (day cream for the morning, night cream for before bed) to your skin. Then, using gentle strokes in a circular motion, rub the cream until it’s fully absorbed into your skin.

And that’s all there is to it! No special formulas or magical miracle cures, just simple products that offer the best care for ageing skin. To find out more about the amazing Absolute Collagen skincare products, browse our Deep Lift Skincare range or head over to our helpful blog.
