What Does Moisturiser Do?

By Darcy Laceby

In the age of beauty influencers, Korean glass skin care, and the 7-step routine, we want to take it back to basics. The humble moisturiser. What does a moisturiser do? What are the benefits of moisturiser? And why moisturise your face every day? Let’s get into it!

Have you ever stood in the skincare aisle of the high street beauty store and been utterly lost? We get it. With all the social media trends and skin care advice we’re bombarded with day-to-day, even something as simple as understanding the benefits of moisturising your face can feel overwhelming.

But the beauty of skincare is, when you break it down, it is wonderfully straightforward and can be tailored to suit you perfectly.

Here at Absolute Collagen, we’re passionate about helping our Absoluters feel their best. So, we’ve put together a handy guide to take you through what a moisturiser does and what moisturiser is used for, as well as the benefits of a moisturiser.

Start your skincare journey, below.

So, what does moisturiser do?

Let’s start with the basics. A moisturiser is used for a range of skincare needs. From your face to your hands, feet to your legs, and everywhere in between, the humble moisturiser is there to bring hydration to your skin.

This is important as your skin is exposed to a whole host of damaging toxins every day. The weather conditions, contaminants in the air from car exhausts, pollution, and cigarette smoke. These all seep into the pores of your skin causing dryness, irritation, and excess oil. And your face bears the brunt of it.

So, what does moisturiser do for your face? Surely, a little bottle of cream can’t undo damage from such strong chemicals and pollutants, right? Well, moisturisers might be small, but they sure are mighty!

Even the most simple of moisturisers for your face can work wonders. They target and prevent dry or oily skin, improve the skin barrier to stop those harmful pollutants from getting into your pores in the first place, and they can be used to treat common skin conditions.

The benefits of moisturising your face are endless and it’s so simple to do as well! But it’s not just your face that needs some TLC, the rest of your body can reap the benefits of moisturiser too!

What are the benefits of moisturiser?

Whether your skin is dry, oily, a bit of both, or if you live with common skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or acne. There’s a moisturiser out there that can help you manage those symptoms.

Now we know what a moisturiser does, let’s break down the benefits of a moisturiser.

1. Soothes and calms your skin

From the recycled air in the office to the harsh weather conditions of winter, your skin goes through a lot during the day and that can cause irritation and dryness.

Your ideal moisturiser is there when you need it most. One of the benefits of moisturiser is its ability to calm your skin after the damage it picks up throughout the day. A water-based moisturiser restores evaporated water from the skin, helping to soothe the skin as well.

But it’s not just water-based moisturisers that are soothing for the skin. If you suffer from dry skin, maybe because of eczema or psoriasis, an oil-based moisturiser is good for dry skin too. Oil-based moisturisers tend to be richer, making them ideal for getting deep into the skin for relief from dry skin.

2. Can target specific skin issues

Everyone has a different skin type. You might have sensitive skin, or it might be oily, dry, or combination (both oily and dry). No matter the type, the benefits of moisturiser can help.

A lot of moisturisers these days come with added vitamins, antioxidants, SPF, and serums. For example, if you find your skin to be stressed and dull or you have an uneven skin complexion, you can pick up a moisturiser with added vitamin C*.

Now, this vitamin is great for treating visibly dull skin and bringing back that gorgeous flow. But did you know hyaluronic acid can do this and more? A moisturiser or serum with added hyaluronic acid helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, aids the improvement of skin elasticity, and reduces redness in the skin.

Not all vitamins are beneficial for every skin type, so we always recommend you perform a patch test first. From there, you can go ahead and begin piecing together your ideal routine to reap all the benefits of moisturising.

3. Helps reduce signs of ageing

One of the benefits of moisturising your face, in particular, is that it can help reduce the visible signs of ageing. That’s because ageing skin can start to show more wrinkles and fine lines, as well as increased dryness.

Well, in addition to moisturising regularly, many of our Absoluters love the difference to their skin from taking a daily collagen sachet. In fact, 100% of users in our clinical trial experienced improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after just 12 weeks.

But we know we’re here to discuss the benefits of a moisturiser! So, that’s why we’ve also got our Deep Lift skincare range. Suitable for all skin types, our day and night creams work to strengthen and protect your skin with its collagen-boosting ingredients!

4. Protection from UV rays

The benefits of a moisturiser are only as good as the strength of your SPF. Even if you diligently follow a 7-step skincare routine twice a day, this won’t stop UV ray damage.

Since UV rays come from the sun, you might think that an SPF is only needed in spring and summer, but these rays can dry out your skin in winter and autumn too.

If you’re looking to save time, you can get a moisturiser with added SPF. Ideally, you want an SPF of 30 or more, which you can find in our Absolute Collagen day cream. This is to help protect your skin and keep all that lovely moisture locked in.

So, now you know all there is to know about the benefits of a moisturiser and what a moisturiser does. But do you want to know more about the benefits of collagen for skin?
