Can You Take Too Much Collagen?

5 mins By Darcy Laceby collagen

Whether you are wondering why you should take collagen everyday or are concerned about taking too much collagen, let the Absolute Collagen team put any worries to rest.

We’ve all heard the old adage that you can have too much of a good thing.

But, while we (begrudgingly) accept that this is the case for our favourite chocolate treats, does the same principle apply to our collagen daily dose? Can we take too much collagen and experience negative symptoms?

On the flip side, how much collagen per day should we take to notice positive results? Is there a collagen dose sweet spot that we should all aim to consume?

Well, to set the record straight about how much collagen you should take, we’ve answered your questions about recommended collagen doses, below.

Should I take collagen?

Before we get into the specifics of how much collagen per day you should take, you might be wondering why you should take collagen in the first place.

After all, as the main component of your bones, skin and connective tissue, your body already produces its own collagen naturally. Here’s the crucial part though - our production of collagen starts to slow down and deplete as we age. This typically starts at 25 but can vary from person to person.

But, we hear you ask, why does this matter? Well, to briefly touch upon the science behind collagen, the collagen fibres in your skin provide the structural support, strength, and elasticity that helps young skin look smoother, thicker, and tighter. As we get older and our collagen levels deplete, fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing being more pronounced and noticeable.

Of course, the passage of time and genetics are both facts of life and something that can’t be helped. However, there are ways to minimise such drastic collagen loss, such as avoiding too much sun exposure, smoking, and a high sugar diet, as well as getting enough sleep and water. What’s more, according to our lovely Absoluters, our collagen daily dose can help mitigate some of those signs of ageing too.

But can you take too much collagen and experience negative effects? And, precisely, how many mg of collagen per day should you take?

Can you take too much collagen?

Let’s get this out the way early doors: a large amount of collagen is unlikely to cause you any harm.

So, while Absolute Collagen daily dose sachets contain 8,000mg of marine collagen, it is completely safe to take more. However, 8,000mg is the optimum amount of collagen your body can successfully consume at any one time – if you take too much collagen, you can impact your body’s ability to process your dosage. The same goes for your protein intake, which is why we do not recommend combining your collagen daily dose with protein shakes.

However, you may notice that some companies recommend taking a collagen dose that exceeds 8,000mg a day. This is due to their product having a higher molecular weight. This might sound like a positive thing but, in actual fact, it means your body will only absorb a small percentage. Absolute Collagen, however, has a low molecular weight meaning the body can absorb 90-95% of your recommended collagen dose.

If you do want to take more than 8,000mg, then we recommend that you stagger your dose throughout the day. For instance, you might take one collagen sachet in the morning with your breakfast and one before your bedtime skin routine. If, at any point, you are concerned about taking too much collagen, or you start experiencing any strange symptoms, we recommend asking your doctor about your collagen dose.

Before you assign any negative changes to taking too much collagen, however, it’s also sensible to scrutinise any additional ingredients in your supplement. Absolute Collagen daily dose sachets contain just a few ingredients – all of which are entirely safe and natural, such as vitamin C, water, and marine collagen peptides.

In comparison, other methods of consuming collagen, such as collagen pills, can often contain unknown chemical fillers and binders. They also typically contain less collagen per serving. Taking a collagen daily dose with just 1g less than our liquid collagen means you can miss out on 31 grams of collagen every month!

Our collagen daily dose sachets are also free from lactose, gluten, and dairy - so it is completely suitable for those with related intolerances. Likewise, it is perfectly fine to consume if you are diabetic.

How much collagen per day should I take?

Now you know all about the effects of taking too much collagen, let’s talk about how much collagen per day you should take to see positive results.

Don’t worry, the answer is simple: our recommended collagen dose is one Absolute Collagen sachet a day (8,000mg).

Of course, if you take less than this amount and still notice positive changes, then continue with how many mg of collagen per day works well for you. Alternatively, if you’re taking the recommended collagen dose and aren’t seeing instant results – don’t feel disheartened. That collagen daily dose might be being used in a different way than you envisioned.

For example, if take collagen doses to see improvements to your skin, but your bones and muscles are also collagen deprived, then these areas are likely being addressed first. Perseverance is key!

Ultimately, how much collagen per day you should take differs from person to person.
