Does Collagen Cause Weight Gain?

5 mins read By Darcy Laceby weight

We’re often asked here at Absolute Collagen if collagen causes weight gain – so we’ve put together a blog to answer all your questions around collagen and weight gain, collagen and muscle growth, and collagen and cellulite. Let’s bust the myths and set the record straight!

One of the questions we receive the most at Absolute Collagen is: does collagen cause weight gain? Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, found in bones, hair, nails and more, so taking more of this protein would surely cause weight gain, right?

Well, let’s find out…

Does collagen cause weight gain?

In short, the answer is no, collagen does not cause weight gain.

Collagen is essentially the glue that holds the body together – in fact, its name comes from the Greek ‘kolla’ which literally means glue. It is found all across the body, from bones to skin, joint cartilage to nails, and more.

However, as we get older our collagen levels naturally begin to deplete, and we may start to notice other signs of ageing like wrinkled skin, weight gain, and painful joints.

So, how does collagen relate to these ageing signs and, in particular, what is the relationship between collagen and weight gain?

As collagen is so prevalent in our bodies, many people take it for their skin and nails, but because taking collagen supplements won’t cause weight gain, some of our Absoluters take collagen as part of a healthy eating diet or for a post-gym pick me up!

Does collagen help build muscle?

Collagen is a nifty little protein because it has the ability to do so many things within our bodies, including helping to build lean muscle. This, in turn, helps prevent excess fat and weight gain.

However, our Absoluters do not take collagen for muscle growth. Instead, Absolute Collagen can be a great post-workout boost, with lots of our Absoluters taking it after their gym sessions to support their overall fitness routine, perhaps using one of our delicious smoothie recipes. Our collagen sachets also contain 7.7g of protein, which is essential for restoring muscle after a workout.

Can marine collagen cause weight loss?

Now we know that marine collagen will not cause weight gain, let’s talk about how Absolute Collagen could support your weight loss journey.

That’s because collagen is a protein, which has been scientifically proven to keep people feeling fuller and more satiated for longer. In a study of diabetic and overweight participants, hydrolysed collagen in the form of gelatine was proven to stimulate the release of satiating hormones into the bloodstream, helping the patients feel fuller for longer and reducing their appetite.

So, if you’re worried about weight gain after taking collagen, you needn’t be! Collagen can be used as part of a healthy diet to aid in the reduction of snacking and help you reach your weight loss goal.

Does collagen help reduce cellulite?

Another aspect of weight gain Absolute Collagen can help with is the visible appearance of natural skin dimples, known as cellulite. This dimpled skin is often seen around the thighs, and although it’s a very normal feature of the human body, many people want to minimise its appearance and keep their skin looking as smooth as possible.

We have some lovely success stories here at Absolute Collagen. For example, in our clinical trials, 100% of the participants reported improvements to the appearance of skin evenness and fine lines and wrinkles, within just 12 weeks of taking our Absolute Collagen sachets!

Now you know collagen does not cause weight gain, join our Absoluters and begin your Absolute Collagen journey today. Need more convincing? Check out our collagen success stories or head over to our blog to learn more about what collagen is and how to take it
