We know acne is a hot topic in the skincare community and amongst our gorgeous Absoluters – and we’re here to help! In fact, we wanted to to give a full lowdown on collagen and acne.
So, if you’re wondering if collagen is good for acne or even if collagen can cause acne, we’ve got all your answers, below.
To understand the relationship between collagen and acne, we first need to talk about what acne actually is.
Acne is a condition caused by our sebaceous glands. These glands produce an oily substance called sebum that sits just below our skins surface and keeps our skin hydrated.
So, when people have oily skin, this is due to an overproduction of sebum, which can mix with dead skin cells and block the tiny hair follicles on your face. This is what causes acne.
It doesn’t end there, however. A bacteria called Corynebacterium thrives on sebum – so, in oily skin, it multiplies. Our bodies then mount inflammatory responses against the bacteria, resulting in the typical lesions of acne. That’s why the top end treatment (Isotretinoin) works to dry up skin secretions, depriving the acne of sebum.
The short answer is simple: don’t fiddle with your skin!
However, before we get into whether collagen is good for acne, we wanted to share some other useful tips for managing acne.
Washing gets rid of all the dirt, excess oil, and harmful debris picked up by your skin throughout the day. This leaves you with clean and fresh skin, ready to apply your favourite skincare products (which is where the questions about collagen and acne may have started!).
However, did you know that washing too much can irritate the skin and cause flare ups?
It’s best to wash once in the morning to get rid of excess oil, and then once before you go to bed to remove accumulated dirt and debris. This ‘twice a day’ guidance allows you join up your collagen and acne routines, letting you wash your face and then apply your collagen serum in one fell swoop.
While it’s typically best to avoid applying strongly scented oil-based products onto acne or acne-prone skin, the one exception is tea tree oil.
To apply tea tree to your skin, first mix it equally with an acne-safe carrier oil like jojoba or almond oil. Make sure you have cleansed and pat-dried your skin first, and then lightly dab the product onto your face using a soft cotton wool pad.
Your diet also has an impact on your skin. Eating anti-inflammatory foods and avoiding fried foods, and foods high in carbohydrates or sugar can help to manage acne breakouts.
Try to eat more fruits and vegetables that contain high vitamin C ,(or take our collagen supplement for acne, as it also includes vitamin C!), antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. So, look to add more berries, apples, grapes, and citrus fruits to your diet, as well as more broccoli, beetroot, and sweet potato.
Introducing new products to your acne-safe skin care routine can be nerve-wracking, so we don’t blame you for wondering whether collagen can cause acne or if collagen can make you break out.
To answer your question: no, collagen itself won’t cause acne or make you break out.
The only time collagen can increase chances of an acne flare-up is if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. But don’t worry, we regularly test allergens, confirming that our product does not contain shellfish, molluscs, or nuts to cause any adverse side effects . Absolute Collagen is also free from dairy, gluten, soy, wheat, and lactose.
While taking collagen for acne won’t prevent any outbreaks, Absolute Collagen will not exacerbate any symptoms. That’s because our collagen serum is a non-comedogenic product, meaning it will not clog up or block your pores.
So, if there’s no link between collagen supplements and acne, then exactly why would you use our products? Well, our Absoluter certainly have plenty to say!
We are always running clinical trials to make sure our product is giving the best quality to our Absoluters.
In fact, 100% of the participants in our recent clinical trial reported improvements to the evenness of their skin after 12-weeks of taking our Absolute Collagen supplements. What’s more, 90% of users in this clinical trial reported taking collagen left their skin feeling restored and replenished.
